ChatGPT Dots as a travel planner (OpenAI Dots itinerary guide)
Use ChatGPT Dots / OpenAI Dots to research trips, keep itineraries current, and get deadline nudges—with Gmail, Drive, cloud computer, and optional Slack.

Who this is for
You want a ChatGPT Dot (OpenAI Dots) to research trips, keep an itinerary current, and nudge you before deadlines—without inventing a booking bot that can charge cards on its own. Official docs already use an offsite / venue comparison as a core Dots example; this page turns that pattern into a reusable travel-planner setup.
What you need connected
Connect only what the trip needs (messaging ≠ inbox):
- Talk on the go → ChatGPT (and optionally Slack). Same Dot across contact methods; messages stay in each channel (Message your dot).
- Flights / hotel email threads → Gmail (or another mail plugin you already use). Correspondence is an app connection, not a messaging channel.
- Shared plan doc → Google Drive (or paste links). One named source of truth for the itinerary.
- Research while devices are off → Dot cloud computer (built-in). Cloud browser/files keep working when your laptop is closed (Meet dots).
- Local exports / spreadsheets → Connected computer (optional). Only when you need files on your machine; keep the ChatGPT app open.
Connecting Slack does not connect your inbox. Connect mail and Drive separately (Connect computers and apps).
How the pieces fit together (channels, mail/docs plugins, cloud computer, schedules) is also covered in A deep dive into OpenAI dots — Flavio Copes.
Usage note (so the trip doesn’t surprise your quota)
- Dot conversations do not count toward ChatGPT message limits (Meet dots · Access).
- If the Dot starts Work or Codex tasks (including on a connected computer), those use the shared Work/Codex allowance—see pricing and usage limits.
- Most itinerary research stays in Dot conversation + cloud computer + plugins; open Activity if a separate Work/Codex task appears.
Setup in four steps
- Create your Dot on desktop (getting started), name it, and finish the intro.
- Connect the smallest set: usually Gmail + Drive for a personal trip, or Slack if travel updates live in a channel. If you add Slack, open the Dot profile and confirm the Slack handle plus the Dot’s cloud computer show as connected (OpenAI Dots — TechTiff shows what that profile check looks like).
- Put the trip facts in one place (dates, budget, travelers, must-sees, “never book without approval”).
- Run one bounded research job before any recurring schedule.
First job: compare options (official-style brief)
Paste and replace brackets:
Compare [N] options for [destination / trip type] between [dates]. Constraints: budget under [amount] [currency], [N] travelers, prefer [train/flight], avoid [hard constraints]. Use the cloud browser for public listings and my connected Gmail/Drive only for threads I already have. Return a comparison with: option, total estimate, travel time, cancellation flexibility, and one risk. Do not book or pay. Flag anything that needs my decision by [date] [timezone].
Review the comparison, correct preferences (“no redeyes”, “prefer refundable”), and tell the Dot to save those notes.
Keep the itinerary current
Give it a responsibility, not only a one-shot prompt (Meet dots · Give it a responsibility):
Keep our [trip name] plan current. Sources: [Drive doc link] and emails labeled [label]. Update decisions, open questions, and payments due. Draft suggested replies for my review—don’t send. Message me in ChatGPT when a deposit deadline is within [N] days or the budget variance exceeds [amount].
For a weekday check-in (include timezone and end date):
Each weekday at [time] [timezone] for the next [N] weeks, check [Drive doc / planning channel] for changes to [trip]. Update the checklist. Message me only when a deadline is at risk. Confirm the schedule.
Adding a Dot to a Slack channel alone does not start monitoring—you must specify what to watch (Message your dot).
Reminders and decisions
- Tell the Dot where different updates go (routine progress in ChatGPT; urgent decisions in Slack if connected).
- Ending a voice call does not necessarily stop assigned work.
- Before sharing private trip details into a shared channel, the Dot checks you allowed it.
What not to expect
- Automatic purchases or password changes without the usual approvals / take-over flows.
- Texting as a reliable travel channel: Help describes a limited US Pro beta; Learn’s channels page may still say texting is coming soon—prefer Help for availability (Getting started with your dot).
- EU/UK Pro users: check availability and EU/UK FAQ—Pro Dots launch excludes EEA, UK, and Switzerland; Business Premium / Enterprise follow different regional rules.
