Snapshot

ChatGPT Dots (OpenAI Dots) and Meta Muse are both personal always-on agents with a dedicated cloud computer and strong approval stories. Dots is the ChatGPT-native coordinator (plugins, Slack/Teams, Work/Codex). Muse is Meta’s consumer / small-business agent with WhatsApp entry, Muse Secure VM, and a separate Sentinel permission agent.

Product framing

  • ChatGPT Dots — Always-on agent inside ChatGPT; keeps work moving between conversations; powered by GPT-6 Astra with a per-Dot cloud computer and browser; can start or manage ChatGPT Work / Codex tasks.
  • Meta Muse — Personal AI agent for everyday and small-business goals; message it like a person in the Muse app or WhatsApp; powered by Muse Spark; runs on Muse Secure VM with its own browser.

Entry and audience

  • Dots: ChatGPT desktop/browser first (chatgpt.com/dots); Slack and Microsoft Teams; optional US Pro texting beta per Help. Aimed at people and workspaces already in ChatGPT—including Business Premium and Enterprise (admin Use dots Beta).
  • Muse: Muse app (iOS, Android), muse.ai, and WhatsApp. Meta positions it for “everyone,” with Muse for Small Business expanding connectors. Rollout published for the US (later Meta posts also mention Canada); AI glasses “coming soon.”

If WhatsApp is how your household or customers already talk, Muse’s messaging surface is the differentiator. If your work already lives in ChatGPT plugins and workspace admin, Dots is the closer fit.

Computer and credentials

  • Dots: Per-Dot cloud computer separate from your devices. Optional one personal computer connection. Plugin permissions are shared ChatGPT plugins. Website credentials use private request / Take over patterns described in Learn.
  • Muse: Dedicated Muse Secure VM per person. Credentials go into secure storage so Muse can use them without seeing them; Muse also cannot see passwords typed into the browser. A separate Sentinel agent must approve connector and network egress; people get an audit trail and fine-grained connector scopes.

Meta has also announced Muse Confidential VM later in 2026, where the VM (including data and conversations) is encrypted with a key only the user holds.

Goals, routines, and background work

  • Dots: Responsibilities and Scheduled check-ins; proactive research with permissioned follow-ups; Custom Rules for how work should be done. Continuity across ChatGPT conversations is the default rhythm.
  • Muse: Tell it a goal; it helps build a plan and advances work after you close the app, returning when something changes or approval is needed (e.g. send email, purchase). Memory of what matters can drive unprompted suggestions; you can tell it to “forget.”

Privacy and training notes (as published)

  • Dots: ChatGPT account / workspace controls; Auto-review; Custom Rules cannot override built-in safety. See OpenAI Dots privacy, security, and safety FAQs.
  • Muse: Conversations and VM data are not shared with Meta ad systems; people can opt out of interactions being used to train Meta’s AI models; audit trail of actions; purchase flows may use Link (Stripe) with agent wallet protections as described by Meta.

Always review consequential actions yourself—neither vendor claims zero mistakes.

Pricing and availability (as published)

  • Dots: Eligible Pro 100/200/500 (18+, outside EEA/UK/Switzerland), Business Premium worldwide, Enterprise with admin enablement. First Dot included; Dot chats do not count toward ChatGPT message limits; Work/Codex usage meters when Dot starts/manages those tasks. Details: pricing · availability · EU/UK note.
  • Muse: Free for most everyday use, with paid subscriptions for higher usage (Meta intro). Geographic rollout is narrower than ChatGPT’s Business Premium worldwide claim—confirm Meta’s current availability.

When to pick which

  • Pick ChatGPT Dots (OpenAI Dots) for ChatGPT-native work: plugins, Slack/Teams, Work/Codex handoff, and workspace admin in Business/Enterprise.
  • Pick Meta Muse for WhatsApp-first personal or small-business goals, Meta’s Secure VM / Sentinel story, and the published US/Canada consumer rollout.
