Snapshot

ChatGPT Dots (OpenAI Dots) and Grok Bot are both always-on agents with a cloud computer, connectors, and approval gates. The practical fork is where you live and how many agents you run: Dots is one primary coordinator inside ChatGPT that can hand work into Work/Codex; Grok Bot is a named roster of teammates that share one account computer and learn skills/routines from demonstration.

Product framing

  • ChatGPT Dots — Always-on agent in ChatGPT; keeps responsibilities moving between conversations; asks when a decision needs you. Official materials: GPT-6 Astra, per-Dot cloud computer + browser, can start/manage Work and Codex tasks.
  • Grok Bot — Named AI teammates you message like colleagues; finish multi-step work in real tools (browser, filesystem, terminal). Connectors/MCP where available, computer use otherwise; Bots can run in parallel and hand off ownership.

Where you work day to day

  • Dots: ChatGPT desktop app or desktop browser (chatgpt.com/dots); later the same Dot in the mobile app when supported. Slack and Microsoft Teams channels. Texting is a limited US Pro beta per Help (not a general launch claim).
  • Grok Bot: Dedicated desktop apps (macOS, Windows, Linux) plus iOS/Android. Type, dictate, or voice-chat with each Bot. No ChatGPT surface—access is via Cursor / SuperGrok entitlement.

If your team already standardizes on ChatGPT Business/Enterprise, Dots inherits that workspace. If you already pay for Cursor or SuperGrok, Grok Bot is the native teammate surface.

One agent vs a roster

  • Dots: One primary Dot is the usual model. It can spin background work and delegate into Work/Codex, but the product story is “your Dot” as the coordinator.
  • Grok Bot: Multiple named Bots in parallel, group chats, and task handoffs. Context compounds per Bot (memory, files, sessions), while files and browser logins on the shared computer are account-wide.

xAI’s docs are explicit: separate Bots are not a security boundary because they share the same computer logins. Treat anything on that computer as visible to every Bot you run.

Computer and local access

  • Dots: Per-Dot cloud computer. Optional connect of one personal computer (online + ChatGPT app open). Cloud sessions stay separate from your personal browser; site sign-in uses private request or Take over.
  • Grok Bot: One persistent cloud computer for all of your Bots. Optional local execution with Ask every time / Always / Never; team admins can restrict. Work continues with the laptop closed.

Both can drive websites without a dedicated API. Expect CAPTCHAs, 2FA, and payments to bounce to a human.

Scheduling style

  • Dots: Continuity between chats is the default. Add timed check-ins with a time zone and end date; manage recurring items under Scheduled. Proactive research may run in the background; consequential follow-ups still need permission.
  • Grok Bot: Skills capture “how”; routines attach a workflow to a schedule or supported event. Demonstration can teach a multi-step path once, then reuse it.

Privacy and approvals (public docs)

  • Dots: Built-in safeguards, Auto-review against instructions/Custom Rules/safety requirements, Pause / Activity / Scheduled stop controls, plugin and computer permissions. Data sits under ChatGPT account/workspace controls (see OpenAI Dots privacy FAQs).
  • Grok Bot: Auto Review (Ask first / Allow automatically); human takeover for passwords, 2FA, CAPTCHAs, payments. Uses Cursor authentication and privacy settings; Legacy Privacy Mode is not supported.

Neither product says agents are error-free. Review send, purchase, publish, and production changes before they leave the sandbox.

Pricing and access (as published)

  • Dots: Eligible Pro tiers (18+, outside EEA/UK/Switzerland), Business Premium worldwide, Enterprise with admin Use dots Beta. First Dot included with eligible plans; Dot chats do not count toward ChatGPT message limits; Work/Codex metering applies when Dot starts or manages those tasks. Details: pricing · availability.
  • Grok Bot: Included with paid individual Cursor plans and Cursor Teams, or via linked SuperGrok / SuperGrok Plus / SuperGrok Heavy. Usage typically resets weekly; check current Cursor / xAI plans pages for on-demand usage.

When to pick which

  • Pick ChatGPT Dots (OpenAI Dots) if ChatGPT is already home, you want one coordinator plus Work/Codex, and you need workspace admin toggles.
  • Pick Grok Bot if you want several named teammates, shared-computer handoffs, skills/routines from demonstration, and you already have Cursor or SuperGrok.
